And we are reminded that love and understanding can create a more just world.\nWho Was Martin Luther King Jr?\nMartin Luther King Jr was an American Baptist minister, human rights activist, and leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement from 1954 until his assassination in 1968. He is best known for leading the Montgomery Bus Boycott from 1955 to 1956 and organizing nonviolent campaigns against segregation throughout the South. His most famous speech, “I Have a Dream,” was delivered on August 28th, 1963 at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. In 1964 he became the youngest person ever to receive a Nobel Peace Prize for his work toward ending racial inequality through nonviolent methods.\nThe Impact of MLK Day\nIn 1983 Congress passed legislation making MLK Day a federal holiday with President Ronald Reagan signed it into law in November of that same year. Since then, MLK Day has become an important part of our national identity; each year millions of Americans take part in activities and events honoring Dr. King’s legacy such as volunteering within their local communities or discussing issues related to social justice and inequality at work or school gatherings. By celebrating this special day, we help ensure that Dr. King’s message will not be forgotten or taken lightly by future generations of Americans who seek freedom from oppression, racism, or hatred of any kind.\nOn this Martin Luther King Jr, Day let us commit ourselves anew to carrying out Dr. King’s dream for America by continuing to fight for racial justice and equality across society—and living up to our highest ideals as individuals and citizens alike!
