Origins of All Souls’ Day
All Souls’ Day is a Christian holiday commemorating the faithful departed. It is celebrated on 2 November in Western Christianity, and on the day after Pentecost (the ninth Sunday after Easter) in Eastern Christianity. In Mexico and other Latin American countries, it is also known as “Día de los Muertos”, which is a day when people remember and pray for their deceased loved ones.
The origins of All Souls’ Day can be traced back to the pagan festival of Samhain, which was celebrated by the Celts in Ireland and Britain. This festival marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter.
